Role Overview
Delivers excellent teaching, assessment, and pastoral care within an assigned subject and year groups. Plans and teaches engaging, differentiated lessons aligned to the Scheme of Work. Tracks student progress, provides actionable feedback, and contributes to the wider school community.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver differentiated lessons aligned to the SoW
- Conduct assessments and provide timely, actionable feedback
- Track student progress and plan interventions for underperforming students
- Act as first-line pastoral contact and log safeguarding concerns
- Attend meetings, PD, moderation, and school events
- Contribute to enrichment activities, clubs, and departmental goals
Processes
ST01 — Lesson Planning & Delivery
Frequency: daily / weekly Approval: Subjects Lead Tools: lesson plan template / shared drive Coordinates with: Subjects Lead, KS Coordinator
- Plan lessons aligned to the Scheme of Work and department planning format
- Differentiate for student needs (SEN, EAL, high ability)
- Prepare resources and materials in advance
- Upload lesson plans to shared drive by department deadline
- Deliver lessons using varied pedagogy: explicit instruction, inquiry, collaborative work, retrieval practice
- Manage classroom routines, behaviour, and inclusive practices
- Reflect on lesson effectiveness and adjust future planning
ST02 — Assessment & Feedback
Frequency: per assessment calendar / ongoing Approval: Subjects Lead Tools: SIS / gradebook / marking scheme Coordinates with: Subjects Lead
- Conduct baseline, formative, and summative assessments per department calendar
- Mark and moderate assessments using agreed marking schemes
- Enter data into SIS / gradebook within 48 hours of moderation
- Provide timely, actionable feedback (verbal, written, digital) per policy
- Return assessed work to students with clear next steps
- Use assessment data to identify gaps and plan targeted interventions
- Participate in departmental moderation and standardisation
ST03 — Student Progress & Intervention
Frequency: per data cycle / ongoing Approval: Subject Teacher Tools: intervention tracker / SIS Coordinates with: Subjects Lead, Homeroom Tutor, SENCO
- Review student data after each assessment cycle
- Identify underperforming students against targets
- Plan and deliver targeted interventions (small group, 1:1, adjusted tasks)
- Schedule interventions for identified learners
- Log intervention activities and monitor impact
- Report progress at departmental PPMs
- Escalate persistent concerns to Subjects Lead or SENCO
ST04 — Pastoral & Safeguarding Duties
Frequency: ongoing Approval: Subject Teacher Tools: safeguarding system / SIS Coordinates with: Head of Pastoral, Homeroom Tutor, DSL
- Act as first-line pastoral contact for students in class
- Observe for signs of concern (well-being, safeguarding, behaviour)
- Log concerns promptly in the safeguarding system
- Follow DSL protocols for referrals — do not investigate independently
- Promote attendance, punctuality, and uniform standards
- Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment
- Support behaviour policy and restorative practices in class
ST05 — Reporting to Parents
Frequency: per reporting cycle Approval: Subjects Lead, Head of Academic Tools: SIS / report template Coordinates with: Subjects Lead
- Draft student reports by published deadline
- Include attainment, progress, effort, and actionable targets
- Ensure tone is professional, constructive, and personalised
- Submit to Subjects Lead for QA review
- Revise based on feedback before final sign-off
- Prepare student evidence and talking points for parent meetings
- Attend parent meetings as scheduled
ST06 — Professional Development & Contribution
Frequency: ongoing Approval: Subject Teacher Tools: PD log / reflection Coordinates with: Subjects Lead, Head of Academic
- Attend PD sessions, INSET, and moderation meetings as scheduled
- Participate in peer observations and coaching (observer and observed)
- Implement coaching goals from lesson observations
- Share resources and best practices within the department
- Contribute to departmental meetings with ideas and feedback
- Log PD activities and reflections
ST07 — Enrichment & Co-Curricular Contribution
Frequency: termly / as needed Approval: Subjects Lead, CCA Coordinator Tools: event proposal / sign-up sheets Coordinates with: Subjects Lead, CCA Coordinator, Head of Pastoral
- Run or assist with clubs, competitions, or trips where possible
- Support departmental enrichment events (fairs, showcases, guest speakers)
- Encourage student participation in subject-related activities
- Contribute to school-wide events as required
- Log enrichment contributions for appraisal records
